About the Foundation
Unity Health Care provides comprehensiive medical services to DC residents regardless of race, ethnicity or ability to pay. Its network of health facilities, shelters, and mobile medical units are essential resources in Washington, DC, a city with both dramatic wealth — and devastating poverty.
The Unity Health Care Foundation builds strategic alliances — partnerships — that cultivate corporate philanthropy, foundation grants, private donations, and workplace giving. The Foundation also hosts special events and activities that build awareness of and support for Unity’s work.
The Foundation’s Partners in Caring campaign encompasses all of the programs that make it easier for individuals, companies, and foundations to volunteer, advocate, and donate. This involvement provides essential support for Unity’s work.
What is the Unity Health Care Foundation?
The Unity Health Care Foundation (The Foundation) is a separate fundraising entity of Unity Health Care, Inc. whose primary purpose is to cultivate financial resources that support mission-driven
programming within Unity Health Care, Inc. The Foundation focuses on the development of essential relationships through our Partners in Caring Campaign which engages corporations, philanthropists, foundations and volunteers in the direct support of the various Unity Health Care’s programs and services offered throughout the District of Columbia.
Our Goals:
- To establish an Annual Fundraising Campaign which raises dollars for Capital Development, Program/Service Expansion and/or Stabilization and Undesignated General Funding.
- To strengthen Unity’s image among potential and existing donors, volunteers and the community at-large
- To establish relationships with Major Donors, Corporations, Philanthropists and Foundations.
Substantial health disparities and poor health outcomes among the patients we serve demonstrates the need to ensure that accessible and comprehensive primary care services are available to all who are in need. Toward that end, the Foundation concentrates on the development and implementation of strategic alliances to enhance corporate philanthropy, increase the number of dollars received through foundation grants, private donors and workplace giving. Further, the Foundation assists with brand awareness and recognition for Unity Health Care through hosting special events and activities, volunteering and active involvement in membership-based organizations and within the community. The development of the Unity Health Care Foundation is a bold and innovative step forward in the evolution of Unity Health Care, ensuring that Unity’s programs and services are financially supported and that Unity remains a viable part of the communities we serve.
Unity Health Care Overview
Unity Health Care, Inc. (Unity) was founded in 1985 as Health Care for the Homeless Project (HCHP) providing primary health care services to homeless individuals and families that resided in local emergency shelters or on the streets of the District of Columbia. In 1996, the organization expanded when it became the Federal government’s emergency grantee for the Community Health Center Program, which expanded our patient base to include the underserved, uninsured and working poor residents of the city. Unity’s mission is to offer a continuum of medical care and human services to homeless and medically underserved people in the District of Columbia.
Unity is currently the largest primary health care agency in the area with a team of more than 850 compassionate, multicultural professional staff of medical providers, nurses, medical and dental assistants, pharmacist, counselors and social workers. Every year, our dedicated staff provides quality care to more than 81,000 patients, through more than 490,000 return visits.
Unity’s staff becomes a part of each patient’s life because that is the best way to provide the care our patients need. Providers do what it takes to track patients’ progress, encourage them to continue with their treatment plans and help them rebuild or improve their lives.
Unity has a network of 29 health centers and programs, as a well as a mobile medical outreach vehicle. Our health centers and programs are strategically located within all eight wards of our
city to ensure a higher level of accessibility for our patients. In addition, we offer a full-range of primary health care services that reach every facet of our community to include, but not limited to
the homeless, working poor, under/uninsured, infants, school-age children, the elderly, persons living with HIV/AIDS and/or Hepatitis, as well as those who are incarcerated and recently released from jail and prisons.
Our scope of primary health care services include: internal, pediatrics, family practice and obstetric/gynecological medicine. We also offer dental care, social services, mental health,
family planning, treatment adherence, substance abuse counseling and numerous specialized services (i.e., podiatry, cardiology, pulmonology, gastroenterology, psychiatry, ENT, Ophthalmology, etc.).
Our work is critical for both patients and the health care system here in the nation’s capital. For patients, having access to health care encourages them to address health issues early rather than waiting until they become more serious. Because health issues often arise during times of crisis, Unity provides ongoing support as patients confront life-changing events and make difficult decisions. In addition, without Unity’s ongoing primary care through which more serious problems are often detected these specialty treatments likely would be provided in an emergency room, which is the most costly way to provide medical care. At Unity, we help those who are facing overwhelming challenges. We care, we help…we heal.
