Godfather of Go-Go Shares Reading with Children
The Hunt’s Place Health Center was filled with smiling and enthusiastic children as legendary Go-Go artist Chuck Brown made an appearance to read to the young students. In an effort to promote the importance of early literacy and reading, Brown shared stories with six children as others looked on.

The Washington Nationals continue their season-long community relations efforts with appearances throughout the week. Nationals pitcher Steven Shell will visit Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Library on Thursday, July 10 as part of the Nationals 2008 Summer Reading Program. Shell will participate in a reading circle and pose for pictures with the children. Also on Thursday, outfielder Willie Harris and catcher Paul Lo Duca will host a skills clinic for the students of St. Coletta of Greater Washington, a special education public charter school located in Southeast, DC. Nationals pitcher Odalis Perez will participate in a reading circle at the Unity Health Care, Upper Cardozo Center where he will read to the children in Spanish. In the second year of his player program with the Ronald McDonald House of Greater Washington, Nationals pitcher Jon Rauch will visit the Ronald McDonald DC House and meet with the children and their families who are staying there on Friday, July 11. Jon will then host those families at the Nationals game on Saturday, July 12 vs. the Houston Astros at 7:10 pm.

Unity Health Care Expands Dental Care for D.C. Homeless through a Generous Grant from CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield
WASHINGTON DC (June 24, 2008) - Unity Health Care (Unity) will open a fully-comprehensive dental suite within its health center located at the Federal City Homeless Assistance Center. The facility will be one of the first of its kind in the nation, providing the District's homeless with comprehensive Oral Health services. As with all Unity Health Care services, dental care will be available regardless of patients' ability to pay, in part, thanks to a generous grant of $79,586 to the Unity Health Care Foundation from CareFirst BlueCross Blue Shield (CareFirst).

Design plans for a new reading room at Unity Health Care’s East of the River Health Center were unveiled May 28. Sherry Ways, principal designer, of Design Scheme Interiors LLC, a DC-based interior design fi rm, is leading a team of local volunteers who are refurbishing the reading room with new seating, new books and a mural by local artist William Howard. The health center is located at 123 45th St. NE. Fifty percent of the residents over 16 in the area served by the clinic, Washington’s Ward 7, are functionally illiterate. According to the 2000 Census, 21.5 percent of the families and 24.9 percent of individuals in Ward 7 live in poverty. Unity Health Care, Washington, DC’s largest nonprofi t health and social services organization, serves individuals and families in all eight wards of the District of Columbia through it network of 11 community health centers, four specialized health centers, 10 sites serving homeless people and two mobile medical units. More than 80,000 people, including the working poor, uninsured and homeless, and the formerly incarcerated benefi ted from services in 2007. The Invisible Epidemic - As I was waiting for the results of my AIDS test, the health lecture from my counselor Anthony was calm, explicit and, um, informative. The five bodily fluids that can transmit the HIV virus. The proper way to open a condom package to avoid rips (I did it all wrong). Certain uses for Saran Wrap not specified by the manufacturer.
